Moses spoke to the Jews at the end of their wanderings in the dessert, just prior to their entering the Promised Land, saying that the time had come to take possession of the nations across the Jordan River that were greater and mightier than themselves. He said that, although the cities were fortified and inhabited by giants (Anakims), still the Jews would be victorious because the LORD Himself would go before them to destroy and subdue the giants so that the Jews could drive them out and destroy them quickly. Who or what are your giants? What are the things in your life which you feel can and will overpower you or destroy you? Is debt your giant? Is it an individual or group who have hurt you? Is your boss your giant? Maybe a competing business? Is lack of time your giant? Or perhaps procrastination? Lack of skill, knowledge, or confidence? Do you battle with inner uncertainties? Is fear your giant? You and I have been on a journey with the LORD. Just as the Jews when they left Egypt, we too have vowed to follow the LORD and to worship Him alone. Like the desert wanderers, we have at times been a pleasure in the eyes of the LORD, walking in His Light, and at other times we have disappointed Him by our disobedience, following other roads and putting other things ahead of Him in our lives. Yet He has continued to shine His Light until we are able to find our way out of the darkness and back to Him. The LORD our God has called each one of us to His work - to do a job designed especially for us to help fulfill His plan. He has been preparing us for this work since our earliest years, although we were then unaware. Don't think one job is better than another, more worthy, or more important. The LORD has each cog and each wheel turning toward His goal. And today, this very day, He is assuring you and me that He will go ahead of us to destroy and subdue the giants that stand in the path of His ultimate plan! We can face our giants with faith, knowing that the LORD is standing between us and our enemy, protecting us - as long as we are obeying His commandments and serving Him with all our hearts and with all our souls. The LORD is not allowing us victory because we are "righteous," but because of the wickedness of the giants. We are not better than others because He has called us to His work - far from it! For we are a stubborn people, as were the Jews who wandered for forty years. Our sins are vile and too numerous to count! Still the LORD calls us to Himself to do an important job for His kingdom, in spite of our wicked and rebellious natures. He cleanses us of the stench of our sins so that we can enjoy the privilege of serving Him. Let us not be led into disobedience by the sting of self doubt (which is, in truth, a lack of faith), but rather let us remember His words: "Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is He which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire He shall destroy them, and He shall bring them down before they face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee." [DEUTERONOMY 9:3] Now get out there and slay some giants! Copyright © 2006-2008 Julie Schwartz
