My mother is in a nursing home. Each time I visit her, I see the sad and lonely faces of the others who share her home, and I wonder about them... What kind of life did they have? What's going on behind their blank stares? What is my role as a child of God - what can I do? So I smile, and I say hello. I ask them how they are, and I touch their hand or their shoulder as I speak. And I write... "There's more to me than what you see... I've done so much, and learned so much, I have so much to share... if only you would see beyond the surface. Come, meet my friends... He flew in the war. She led the string section in the symphony. He traveled country roads for miles to care for the sick and hurting. She danced across the lights of a New York stage. He painted.... She wrote.... He sang.... She taught... He owned banks... She built planes for the war... Our mothers kissed our youthful heads. We married our sweethearts and savored life. We raised children of our own. Some lost children... to war, to disease, to accidents. Most of us have lost our sweethearts. We have cried from profound grief - immeasurable and unending. We have prayed... we have prayed. We experienced lives of abundance and lives of poverty. Our hearts were full... our hearts were empty and broken. Our lives had an impact on the world you live in. You look at me and all you see is a helpless, wheelchair-bound body staring blankly ahead and speaking little or none. But I am remembering better days... better times... when I was active, respected, and valued. There's more to me than what you see... I had a life - I have it still... Please see me, and know me for who I really am." "Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth." (Psalm 71:9) "Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish... They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; to show that the LORD is upright..." (Psalm 92:13-15) READ ALL
