Handprints

Handprints

I leave a trail of fingerprints

As I walk down the halls,

And smudges on the light switches

And three feet up the walls.

On door knobs and on cabinets

I leave some dirt for you

So you will know without a doubt

That I have been there too!

But as you scrub on bended knee

Remember just to smile,

Because I will leave fingerprints

For such a little while.

One day you will recall the times

Of handprints on the wall

And wish you could reverse the clock

To days when I was small.
